Shadow Generations is the new game tagged on to Sonic Generations to warrant buying the same game again. This is what I would have thought if this wasn’t one of the best stories Team Sonic has made for a game in years. Penned by Sonic comic writer Ian Flynn the story comes together in inventive ways Sonic games of recent memory just haven’t.
Shadow feels far more fluid to control than Sonic, down to even the level of detail in animation, where Sonic retains his jittery and jagged style of 3d animation from a decade ago, Shadow’s cut-scenes look straight out of a movie.
Differences between Sonic and Shadow’s game-play doesn’t just stop there. I actually feel particularly engaged in playing as Shadow simply because there is actually more going on than just boosting through the stage, you need to actually think to beat the stage with a good rank.
A great focus for shadow is his combat, which is greatly shown in the boss fights of Shadow’s campaign. Ian Flynn’s writing really shines in dialogue between shadow and the bosses, really making the player feel awesome playing as Shadow.
To be honest I really enjoyed playing Shadow Generations, using it as a break from sonic generations. I should hope Sega takes the hint that this is what we fans want from future sonic games.
