Band: Color Guard

PURPOSE: The color guard is part of the marching band. They spin flags, rifles, sabres, and dance. They are a part of the marching band show.

BENEFIT: Gain performance opportunities, learn different skills within color guard as well leadership skills.

FEES: Yes, this activity costs money. It was $685 for new members and $385 for returning members. There is also a trip fee depending on the season.

REGULAR MEETING TIMES: 0 & 1st Hour every day August-October; 1st Hour for the remainder of 1st Semester, Mondays 5-9 p.m., Thursdays 6-9 p.m.

CLASS REQUIREMENT: Marching Band

TRYOUTS: Tryouts typically happen in April in the Papillion South Gym. They usually last three days and are in the evenings. Students learn two routines as well as some skills.

EVENTS: Football Games, Competitions in state and out of state.

COMPETITION: Students compete their marching band show during a prelims/finals format.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Attend rehearsals starting in May as well as competitions in the fall. This is a fun, challenging activity that fosters friendships, leadership development, and performance skills.

Band: Indoor Marching Percussion

PURPOSE: To allow percussionist and other interested instrumental musicians to expand their skills and compete regionally and nationally with a percussion focused production in a gym.

BENEFIT: Students will have fun competing regionally and nationally, as well as expanding their skills and working as a team.

FEES: $900-$1,100 (including trip to Nationals in Dayton, Ohio)

CLASS REQUIREMENT: Band

TRYOUTS: The Titan Band percussion instructor will have audition materials available in early October each year, and auditions will take place at the end of October.

EVENTS: Several local contests, WGI regionals in Bellevue, traveling to Dayton, Ohio for WGI nationals.

COMPETITION: Each team will work up a competition routine, and present it for a panel of judges and a large audience at several local and regional contests.

ADDITIONAL INFO: This popular and highly successful activity allows students who are percussionists or highly interested in percussion with existing musical skills to take the spotlight and stretch their abilities in a competition show designed just for them.

Band: Jazz Band

PURPOSE: Jazz band allows instrumental musicians to expand their abilities on their instruments, playing and learning about a truly American Music form. Uncles perform at band concerts, and also compete multiple times throughout the year at regional festivals.

BENEFIT: Students will expand their skills on improvisation, learn about Jazz music, and have fun expanding their abilities on their instruments.

REGULAR MEETING TIMES: Varies by group, usually 2-3 rehearsals per week, typically before school, or early evenings.

CLASS REQUIREMENT: Band

TRYOUTS: Addition materials are available from the band directors in October.

EVENTS: Winter and Spring Band Concerts, UNO Jazz Festival, NSBA State Jazz Festival

COMPETITION: Each group will prepare a program of approximately three tunes. We will play these at contests for adjudicators, who will give us written comments and a score. Scores determine readings and placements.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Jazz band is a fun way to expand your musical knowledge and gain unique skills on your instrument!

Band: Winter Winds

PURPOSE: To allow instrumental musicians to expand their skills and compete regionally and nationally with a winds focused production in a gym.

BENEFIT: Students will have fun competing regionally and nationally, as well as expanding their skills and working as a team.

TRYOUTS: Audition materials are available from the band directors in mid October, auditions will be held for particular placement in early November. Successful audition demonstrating skills needed.

EVENTS: Several local contests, WGI regionals in Bellevue, traveling to Dayton, Ohio for WGI nationals.

Debate

PURPOSE: Debate is both a class and a competitive team.

BENEFIT: Students will improve their skills in public speaking, critical thinking, researching, and organization.

EVENTS: In order to attend events, students must participate in pre-scheduled tournaments. Competition Season takes place at area high schools from November - March.

COMPETITION: There are 4 types of competitive Debate: Policy (governmental policy), Lincoln-Douglas (philosophy), Public Forum (current events), and Student Congress (simulation of congress). Class Required, students who have taken the class can attend competitive Debates after they understand the categories and rules. The competitive Debate season runs from November - March.

DECA

PURPOSE: DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.

BENEFIT: Apply business & marketing knowledge to real-world scenarios, develop leadership skills, network with other students & business professionals, & get volunteer experiences.

REGULAR MEETING TIMES: Once a month, on a Monday, at 6 p.m.

CLASS REQUIREMENTS: Students must be enrolled in or have taken a business or marketing class. In order to compete in DECA, students must take Marketing 1A & 1B.

EVENTS: DECAsgiving Thanksgiving meeting; Drives fore DECA social at Top Golf

COMPETITION: Students can work individually or as a team. They choose an area of business that they are interested in & are given a scenario related to that field. They take on the role of a business position & have a problem they have to provide solutions for. They are also given a list of business related criteria that they have to cover using creativity. Individuals have 10 minutes to prepare & teams have 30 minutes to prepare. They then present their ideas to a judge who has taken on another role in the scenario. Each participant also takes a 100 question multiple choice test related to that business area. Students who take Marketing 2 work directly with a real business or organization to develop a business plan (10-20 page paper). They work in groups of 1-3 and work on it all of first semester. They come up with a creative plan for the business based on the category they are competing in. They share and get feedback from the business or organization. Some are actually implemented! Students then present their project to judges at state DECA in March.

ADDITIONAL INFO: It is a great organization to get involved in! DECA provides resume worthy experiences, networking with students & professionals, volunteer opportunities, and social events. It allows students apply business knowledge and help develop 21st century skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, and communication, allowing them to grow both academically and personally. Students who participate in DECA will benefit regardless of the career they plan to pursue!

Journalism

Journalism (Anne Albracht)

PURPOSE: To staff and manage the PLSouthside Scroll student news website, Titan Legacy school newsmagazine and South Star yearbook

BENEFIT: Students develop strong communication skills, attain a deeper connection to and understanding of the school community, and work in a collaborative environment to create professional-level publications for a real audience. Students can specialize in writing, design or photography. Various opportunities for leadership and competition exist. Varsity letter can be earned through points system.

CLASS REQUIREMENT: Journalism 1 (semester prerequisite), JRN:News Magazine/Web (year), JRN: Yearbook (year) – A semester of Journalism 1 is required before enrolling in either publication class. Advanced journalism classes can be taken repeatedly for elective credit, and student leaders typically are students who have been on staff for multiple years.

TRYOUTS: First semester Photographer Tryouts require two best yearbook-worthy news/feature photos and two best sports/action photos from current school year; Leadership application process requires essay and video, plus staff vote.

EVENTS: Walsworth Yearbook Workshop at Embassy Suites in September, Nebraska High School Press Association Fall Convention at UNL in October, UNO High School Media Conference in April, NSAA High School Journalism Championships in April. (Opportunities for out-of-state travel to JEA/NSPA National Conventions each year.)

COMPETITION: Students have opportunities to compete in various categories (writing, design, photography, broadcasting) for the Journalism Education Association Nebraska Winter Contest, the UNO High School Media Conference and the NSAA High School Journalism Championships. See the Hall of Champions for previous first-place medalists in various Journalism events.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Photographers put in a lot of time outside of class covering events in all areas of the school and off-campus. This is a collaborative environment and a team effort that requires full commitment from all members. Student journalists are responsible to the school community they serve. Navy JROTC

PURPOSE: Navy JROTC is a U.S. Navy-affiliated program that uses military values and activities to encourage students (“cadets”) to develop character, patriotism, self-discipline, work ethic, and teamwork.

BENEFIT: Students learn about the Armed Forces and their history, work on military skills, and participate in physical education. In addition, there are a number of NJROTC teams and activities, some of which compete against other local and regional programs. These include our Color Guard, Drill Teams, Athletics Team, Marksmanship Team, and Drones Team.

Show Choir

Titanium (Brooklyn Anson)

PURPOSE: Using a competition show model, show choir is for those who love to sing, dance and perform with their peers. Show Choir gives the vocal music students at Papio South another opportunity for performance. Show Choir takes singing and adds choreography and a kick butt band to the mix. They have two performances at home and compete at 4-6 competitions around the region. The purpose for the Papillion La Vista South Show Choirs is to promote and develop top quality musicianship and choreographic movement; to instill confidence in members; to teach responsibility, time management and organization; and to serve as ambassadors to the school, community, and state.

BENEFIT: Using character-driven life skills, we grow the skills of singing, dancing and performing with team-focused preparation toward competing in the winter.

STUDENT LEADERS: Dance Captains and Vocal Captions: These change each year.

NUMBER OF MEMBERS: Titanium - 58 / Radiance - 60 / Express - 58, plus 20 member show band

FEES: $550-$650

REGULAR MEETING TIMES: 2 rehearsals per week, before or after school depending on the ensemble.

CLASS REQUIREMENT: Any curricular choir at Papio South

TRYOUTS: Freshman are only eligible for Titan Express; 10-12 are eligible for Radiance and Titanium. Students sing "My Country 'Tis of Thee" in a key of their choice, prepare a 1:00 cut of music (music changes each year) to sing and dance to. There are optional audition prep classes held on a Monday-Friday in April, auditions on that Saturday. A tryout will consist of the following: demonstration of singing ability and coordinated movement. Other music teachers or show choir educators may be present during auditions to assist with casting of the ensembles. The director will make a final decision. The format of the tryouts will be in two parts. First, “My Country Tis of Thee” in an appropriate key a cappella. The second part of the audition will be the choreographed part. Each candidate will prepare the audition material song and dance with a partner. Tryouts will be held in a fair and open manner conducive to allowing each candidate to show his/her best abilities and potential. Auditions are closed to the public and 3 to 5 outside judges will be brought in to adjudicate the auditions.

EVENTS: January 16 - Show Choir Debut. Regional and national competitions from January to March. This year, Gretna Ready for Primetime (Jan. 18), Lincoln East Spartan Spectacular (Feb. 1), Papillion LaVista South Titan Classic (Feb. 7-8), Elkhorn South HS (Feb. 15), Hastings Minnesota Swingin' on the River (Feb. 22), Lewis Central Clash of the Titans (Iowa, March 8)

COMPETITION: The show choir program at Papio South is steeped in a tradition of excellence. These choirs are state, region and nationally renowned. The Papio South ensembles compete against other show choirs from around the Midwest and beyond at all-day Saturday competitions in the Winter. These competitions are open to the public for an entry fee.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Students must be passing all current classes in order to be allowed to perform at concerts or contests and must adhere to the code of conduct as outlined in the show choir handbook. Students must be signed up for a curricular choir. Students must attend all rehearsals and performances. Show choir is a team sport in all aspects. Every person in the group is a starter, and their presence is wanted and needed. The rehearsal process begins with vocal rehearsals in September, choreography in October, and full rehearsals through the competition season.
