When the school decided to announce the theme of this year’s Post-Prom on social media, it provided an image meant to capture the idea of “A Night of Carnival Magic,” but the image itself was more the stuff of nightmares.

When looking at it from a distance, the illustration seems like nothing out of the ordinary. However, there are multiple inconsistencies within it that reveal it to be an AI-generated image, such as the people’s arms bending in unnatural ways and faces being unrecognizable.
This highlights one of problems with Artificial Intelligence. It has gone a long way in terms of image generation, yet it still is not perfect and the errors are often easy to spot. There are also problems with the ethics of these pictures in terms of replacing professional artists – or robbing students of the opportunity to create an original work to be shared and celebrated by the school.
Any time a viewer isn’t sure if a picture is AI or not, there are multiple ways to discern. One way is to use a website like hivemoderation.com, which calculates the likelihood of AI generation by using algorithms such as “machine learning,” which collects datasets containing examples of content, to generate a percentage measuring the probability of whether an image was AI generated or not. Papio South’s Post-Prom promo earned a 97.8% on that scale.
