Sonic X Shadow Generations is the newest entry from Sega into the sonic franchise. As a Remake of the original Sonic generations the titular sonic portion of Sonic X Shadow Generations certainly could have been better.
The game-play of Sonic Generations is split into 9 Levels consisting of 2 acts each with a boss fight after 3 levels. In the first act you play through a 2-Dimensional Act as “classic sonic”, a younger version of sonic based on his earliest games. In the second act you traverse a 3-Dimensional Act playing as “Modern Sonic”, the ‘modern’ design for Sonic from the last twenty years.
Classic Sonic Acts are not my favorite levels in the game, the controls feel unrefined and wonky, far different from the controls of sonic in his adventures back on the Sega Genesis in Sonic the hedgehog 1-3. I often found myself bored in these Acts, trying to just move on for the sake of progression, rather than exploring the stage. On paper, it’s just bad level design.
Modern Sonic feels better in more regards, his levels feel more natural to play, more often incentivising me to find new ways to go faster. These Acts are not without their faults, later Modern Sonic stages feel cramped with very little room to navigate, a problem in a game where you gotta go fast.
